Thanks to our friends at Cowboys Zone, we acquired two pictures of the Cowboys’ Draft War Room.  The second of these provides an up-close glimpse of the Cowboys’ draft board.  Below is a list of the names we were able to decipher, along with the round and order in which the Cowboys graded that prospect.  Note that, due to the positioning of Jerry’s arm in the photo and the ineligibility of some of the names, this is not a comprehensive list.

A few interesting notes

  • Gerald McCoy over Ndamukong Suh
  • Sean Lee #14 overall, Navarro Bowman #20 overall
  • First-rounders Dallas had with second round grades: Devin McCourty, Demaryius Thomas, Jerry Hughes, Brandon Graham, Dan Williams, Kareem Jackson, Ryan Mathews, Brian Price
  • First-rounders with a sub-second round grade: Anthony Davis and Patrick Robinson
  • The Cowboys must be thrilled to secure two of their top 14 overall players, but they didn’t obtain particularly good value (on their board) with any other selection.

How do you get a definite #14 for Sean Lee? The name right above Odrick doesnt look like Sean or Lee. It looks like it starts with a “D”, esp when you compare it to the other “D”s on the board. It doesnt look like an “S” nor does the rest of the letters look like they make up “ean”. I think we can deduce that Bulaga would be in the top 23 and JJ said Dez and Lee were top 16 but the name above Odrick doesnt look like Dez, Bryan or Sean.

  2. Good question! Perhaps I should have included this in the article, but if you look at the numbers after each player, it is the round and overall pick # at which they were chosen. The word you see that starts with a ‘D’ is Dallas, and the numbers after it are “2-55”–second round, 55th overall selection. That is where the ‘Boys chose Sean Lee.

It took me a little while to decipher that as well, but if you look around the board you can see that is the code. Great comment though.

    aaaaahhhh that makes sense!! ok…

I think y’all should run a “caption contest” for both of those picks. haha

JJ: “you dont mind if I just move these around, do ya?”
JJ: “Why didnt we use pictures this year like I asked?”
JJ: “worth the move up to 24? If Deion Sanders says he is… that’s good ’nuff for me!” hahaha

  4. Haha not a bad idea…we can start that right here in the comments..

  5. Jerry: “Well guys, we just got Sean Lee.”

Wade: “Uhhh, we told you to pick Morgan Burnett.”

Jerry: “Yeahhhhh so I went ahead and took Sean Lee. Is that a problem?”

Wade: “No, can I try to make a pick next time though?”

    Jerry: “Nope.”

Wade: “Okay, just figured I’d ask.”

  6. soldierhorn says:

Navarro Bowman #20th?!?! wow… he wasnt even rated in the top ten of OLBs and was taken 91st overal pick (3rd) and Wade has him in the top 20? Who in the war room had a hard on for Penn State this year? I agree they need a LB but Bowman rated ahead of Brandon Graham and Weatherspoon? …really? Dallas needs a Tackle and to get younger on OL but they dont have Anthony Davis listed until the 3d round when he was a projected 1st round selection and top 3 or 4 OT in the draft (drafted #11)? wow… some things you say, ok… it’s just a matter of preference such as Jahvid Best instead of Ryan Mathews – no big deal if you need a RB – BUT Bowan in the top 20?

  7. Yeah Bowman up there is even more shocking than Lee. Just imagine…had the Cowboys not traded up for Lee and he was selected, Cowboys fans might be even more irate because Bowman would have been the pick.

It’s funny, I just stumbled on this, and noticed the negative comments people had for how high Bowman was rated.

Looks like Dallas had some excellent LB scouting for this draft!
