Dez Bryant to the Cowboys: A Few Thoughts on the Ripple Effects

We originally compared Dez Bryant to Larry Fitzgerald.  Yes, he possesses that level of ability.  However, his selection was surprising and creates a lot of intrigue for both the rest of this draft and the future of the Cowboys’ wide receivers.  Some of our thoughts are below.

  • Which direction do the Cowboys go tonight?  They traded their third round selection (No. 90 overall) to the Patriots for their fourth-rounder (No. 119 overall) in the Bryant deal.  Thus, Dallas has just one pick tonight.
  • You would think free safety and offensive line are the primary focuses right now, but don’t rule out another ‘value pick’ if a top-rated player drops.  A few names to keep an eye on at the free safety spot:  Morgan Burnett, Chris Cook, and Akwasi Owusu-Ansah
  • What is the future of Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton?  Jerry Jones said Williams is still not going anywhere but 3rd wide receivers must play special teams–not exactly Williams’ forte.  Crayton may be a more likely casualty from this move.  Watch for him or Sam Hurd to possibly be traded tomorrow (for basically anything).

This was a good get. I hated to give up any pick, but a late 3rd was a 4th anyway. No doubt we got a top 10 talent and a playmaker. We are definitely set at WR. Maybe not day one, but by midseason, he is making some plays. He will help in the return game immediately. Also, looks like a few guys are on the way out. Roy has one more year.

  2. Yeah, I think Bryant’s return ability is what took him over the top. Because he upgrades two positions (at least eventually), his value was through the roof for Dallas.
