How many of these “busts” are junior quarterbacks and how many were seniors? The only successful NFL QB that came out as a junior that I can think of is Ben Roethlisberger…look at the rest:
Grossman,Boller, Leftwich, Carr, Harrington, Russell, Alex Smith, Lossman, Patrick Ramsey, I would go on but I’m not in the mood to rack my brain thinking of shitty quarterbacks…but still, if you look at the first round senior QBs and look at their success rate it’s quite a bit different than the junior QBs.

I think the reason more (Percentage-wise) 2nd round QB picks made the Pro Bowl is because of the inherent nature of the position. In other words, teams tend to over-value QB’s. Duh. Then, of course, there’s the fact that more of the 1st rounders go very high, and thus to very bad teams, whereas the 2nd and 3rd rounders may well wind up with solid organizations.
Lastly, 1st round QB’s are more likely to be thrown in too early, while those chosen later are more likely to sit and learn for awhile until they are deemed ready. Less pressure, IOW.
What I find more interesting is that QB’s tend to be taken either high (First 3 rounds) or they drop to low round or free agents. Not much in the middle rounds.
, and thus there’s likely a higher number of “busts” in the 1st round.

Excellent point about 1st rounders being at a disadvantage because they went to bad teams. I am actually going to look at drafts of the past 30 years right now and figure out the average draft spot of first-rounders to see if that is indeed true. If so (which I expect), kudos on the observation.

I feel that you could delve deeper into the statistics but still keep them simple. For instance, maybe pro bowls per season? Like if there are 60 QBs in the league, 25 are first rounders, 10 are second, and 5 from each of the next 5 rounds. Since maybe 5 of the 6 pro bowlers every year are from the 1st round, that would be 0.2 pro bowls per season per QB for the first round. Lets say the other QB is from the 2nd round, that would be 0.1 PB/S for 2nd round QBs. Its a more telling stat I think.
