Introducing “Breaking Down the ‘Boys” at Dallas Morning News
I recently teamed up with Dallas Morning News to provide Cowboys coverage this season. My segment is called “Breaking Down the ‘Boys” and it will basically be an extension of what I’ve been doing here for the past few years. You’ll see a heavy emphasis on film study in addition to the usual stat analysis.
My first article at DMN is up now. I broke down two plays from the second-team offense and defense in last night’s Cowboys game.
Following the two-minute warning in the second quarter, the Raiders faced a 3rd and 2 at the 25-yard line. They initially lined up in “Spread” before motioning the slot receiver to the left side to create a “Trips Bunch” look (three receivers packed tightly near the offensive line). Offenses often run crossing routes out of Bunch in short-yardage situations.
The Cowboys showed blitz prior to the snap. When the Raiders’ receiver motioned, Cowboys cornerback Mario Butler followed him. This alerted to Raiders quarterback Matt Leinart that the Cowboys were in man coverage.
Butler was late in trailing the receiver, however, and never caught up to his man as he motioned. As the Raiders snapped the ball, Butler was out of position.
