At Dallas Morning News, I took an in-depth look at the Dez Bryant-Aqib Talib matchup. I studied all of Talib’s snaps from last week against a similar receiver in Hakeem Nicks:

On the Giants’ first drive of the game, the offense faced a 3rd and 8 at the Bucs’ 20-yard line. Lined up to the boundary, the Giants had Nicks running a simple ‘go’ route.

At the snap of the ball, Talib mirrored Nicks nicely. He was able to get his hands into Nicks’ torso, disrupting his route within five yards.

Because Talib got the best of Nicks at the line, he was able to flip his head around to see Eli Manning’s throw.

As a cornerback, outstanding ball skills mean nothing if you aren’t in position to see the football. On this play, Talib won at the line of scrimmage and was able to knock down the pass near the end zone.Talib wasn’t very consistent with his jam, however. At times, he lunged toward Nicks, taking an all-or-nothing approach. It allowed Talib to stone Nicks at the line on certain plays, but on others he got beat badly.
