Cowboys’ Potential 2013 Draft Pick: Sam Montgomery, DE, LSU
At Dallas News, I broke down LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery, who I provided with an early second-round grade.
LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery was a highly-productive player at LSU, registering eight sacks as a redshirt junior in 2012. The 6’5’’, 260-pound prospect teamed up with Barkevious Mingo to form one of the most electric pass-rushing duos in the nation.
Montgomery is a tall, fast defensive end that will lure some teams simply because of his size/speed combination. After watching Montgomery against Alabama, Washington, and Florida, however, I don’t think he necessarily uses his tools to the best of his ability.
When Montgomery gets off of the snap quickly, he’s a dangerous player. You can see that at the two-minute mark below when he gets out of his stance quickly and uses a nice spin move to beat the left tackle inside for the sack. The problem is that Montgomery is consistently slow off of the ball. You can watch just about any other play in that Alabama game and see how much later Montgomery moves after the snap as compared to his teammates.
