At Dallas News, I continued my assessment of the Cowboys’ red zone play.

I was sifting through some numbers on StatsPass and noticed that Dallas ran a disproportionate number of their plays between the 20s last season. Below, I charted the offense’s rank in total number of plays in various areas of the field.

You can see that the Cowboys ran relatively few plays near their own goal line, ranking as low as 29th in the NFL in plays inside their own 10-yard line. That’s a good thing, of course. However, the offense also ran few red zone plays, ranking 19th in plays inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and just 29th in plays inside the 10-yard line. So the Cowboys aren’t only failing near the goal line, but they’re having trouble even approaching it once they enter the red zone.
