More (Kind Of) Cool Stats on Tackling
In my ongoing effort to analyze a very specific NFL topic as much as I can until everyone has lost interest, I’ve posted two more articles on tackling at Dallas News. The first shows the Cowboys’ rank in tackle rate in 2012.
In any event, I recently charted the Dallas defense against every other NFL team in terms of tackle rate—the percentage of tackles that they made relative to what they attempted. The missed tackle stats are courtesy of Pro Football Focus.
And the second explores how much Dallas can improve with a better tackle rate:
I mentioned that it’s unclear whether the best defenses tackle well because they have good players, or if tackling well is what propels them up the defensive ranks. It’s probably some combination of the two, but we don’t need to know the answer to understand that tackling is extremely important to team success. Here’s evidence of that.
