The Blonde Side: Celebrating Super Bowl Sorrows

Celebrating Super Bowl Sorrows

February is rapidly approaching and the Super Bowl is ALREADY moving into the DFW.

I won’t lie–I’m a little heartbroken my Dallas Cowboys aren’t going to be playing on their home turf the big day, BUT I’m not going to let that ruin my Super Bowl experience.  I tried the whole Super Bowl predictions thing and that went out the window with Falcons/Pats. . .so I guess I’ll jump on the Jets/Packers bandwagon?!

On a brighter note, DFW will be buzzing with appearances by your favorite athletes, celebrities and performers.  Even if you can’t find tickets to the game, don’t miss out on all the fun. . .but start planning your weekend NOW!  After all, this is TEXAS and you know what they say about Texas!  Let’s show these two teams how the Super Bowl REALLY goes down!

Whether you are CELEBRATING your team in the Super Bowl or drowning your Super Bowl SORROWS, join me for a weekend of UNFORGETTABLE moments!

The Blonde Side: Rent-A-Ranger

The Blonde Side

Rent-A-Ranger

A lot of criticism surrounded the Texas Rangers last season as they acquired several free agents in order to give themselves a strong position in the post-season.  Obviously, their plan worked as the Rangers became the American League Champs and made their World Series debut, but what happens now?

Some people believe the Rangers would have gone nowhere had they not signed such high profile free agents as a temporary solution, while others support the players who battled through the season.

I am one of the people who support the initial 40-man (weird…me supportive?) and stand by the notion the Texas Rangers will remain contenders for the 2011 season with or without the 2010 free agents.  I think people fail to recognize the position we took very early in the AL West race without the assistance of Lee, Guzman, Cantu, or Francoeur.  I think they definitely contributed to the success of the team (especially Lee and Francoeur) and love having them on the roster, but I don’t think the team will crumble without them.

Cliff Lee is the #1 free agent in the MLB circuit and most people believe his days with Texas were short and sweet, but I think the Rangers are a strong contender for #33.  Though the Rangers do not have the financial ability to offer Lee the highest bid, they are positioned to be competitive with the new ownership.  Salary is obviously a huge extrinsic motivator for Lee (and any player) in determining where he wants to be, but other factors go into decision and salary can hold less value to different people.

The fans were completely supportive of Lee from the moment he arrived in Texas.  The organization did what they could to make him feel right at home; the area is close to his off-season home in Arkansas, the players are a very tight knit group who support each other and socialize on and off the field, and there are several intrinsic factors working in the favor of the Rangers seeing Lee in their uniform next year.

Whether we see our free agents report to Surprise in the spring or not, this ball club is focused on maintaining a hard-working atmosphere and will be a big contender for many years. . .not just looking to Rent-a-Ranger!

BASEBRAWL

We all know football is filled with player celebrations, small quarrels and constant banter between opposing teams.  Hockey has a player designated for starting fights on the ice and creating excitement for the crowd … but has baseball started turning up the heat?

From the minor leagues to the big diamond, players and coaches alike have been a little testy during this 2010 season, and I’m not complaining!

In August New York – Penn League Pittsburgh Pirates manager Gary Robinson made a scene after being ejected from the game by literally stealing first base, signing it and giving it to a fan!  Though his temper tantrum didn’t even register on the Phil Wellman scale from three years ago, it caused quite a stir in the baseball circuit.

On the major league level, you may recall the acts of Washington Nationals player Nyjer Morgan with several different opposing teams.  Morgan’s approach and attitude during the season had his very own manager questioning his professionalism and the intentions behind his aggressive style.  Though a little fight on the field is entertaining, a player intentionally injuring members of the opposing team is definitely NOT part of the tradition of the game.

The post-season is no exception to the feisty play this year.  In the NLCS, Phillies player Chase Utley exchanged words (ultimately clearing benches) with Giants pitcher, Jonathan Sanchez.  Although no one was ejected from the game (bullpen members even waited patiently in a single file line), the intense atmosphere of the game is undeniable.

From small disputes between players/managers and the umpires to arguments amongst teammates in the dugout (like we witnessed with the Tampa Bay Rays), this season has been packed with an immense amount of baseBRAWL!
